The One Basic Sewing Hack that Everyone Should Know

When fixing a hem or cuffing a pant leg, we often opt to hand things over to a professional or a sewing machine, after all, a wonky stitch, haphazardly running across the bottom of a nice pair of pants doesn’t really fit the picture.

We’re happy to tell you that with this little stitching hack, you can skip the professionals all together!

With no more than your thumb and a marker, perfect stitches are right around the corner.

Materials:

  • Washable Marker or Pen

  • Needle

  • Thread

Instructions:

1. Using a pen, mark 3-4 lines, or “stitches”, on the outside of your thumb on the opposite hand to which you use to sew, in consistent, desired spacing.

2. Holding the fabric that you plan to stitch in the hand with the thumb marked with stitches, and begin stitching.

3. Move your thumb with the lines along the stitches, as you go, to have a gauge for perfectly spaced stitches.
