The Gentlemen has landed on Netflix, welcoming in a new chapter of the Guy Ritchie franchise that began with his 2019 film of the same name.

Starring Theo James and Kaya Scodelario, the Netflix series follows Eddie Horniman (James), who inherits his father's estate only to learn he has been working with a criminal drug organisation — who has a large weed operation hidden on his property. Keen to get out of the business, the newly-minted Duke of Halstead decides to work with the operation's boss Susie Glass (Scodelario) in order to leave the operation.

With eight episodes ready to binge on the streaming platform, Netflix subscribers are no doubt going to speed through the slick crime drama and then begin to ask the question — what's next? Here is everything you need to know, but be warned this article contains some spoilers for season 1.

Despite his best efforts to leave the drug business that was set up on his land, by the end of the series Eddie comes to realise that he actually quite likes being part of the criminal underworld. After some close calls and betrayals that led to him almost being killed, Eddie comes to an agreement with Susie Glass.

The pair hedge their bets and decide to become a dual operation, suggesting to Susie's father Bobby (Ray Winstone) that they become the heads of the business. Bobby had decided to sell the company to the highest bidder, and through some well-executed schemes Eddie and Susie are able to successfully do away with their competitors: Stanley Johnston (Giancarlo Esposito), Mercy Moreno (Martha Millan), and Sticky Pete.

Johnston was incarcerated for tax evasion, while Eddie pitted Mercy against Sticky Pete before hiring a hitman to do away with her. In the end there was only one choice for Bobby Glass: Eddie and Susie. That wasn't the end of Johnston, though, because the season ends with the character revealed to be in prison with Bobby, with whom he may well come to work with.

What this means is that The Gentlemen is set up well for a second season. Viewers can see how Eddie and Susie work together as business partners and what they are capable of doing with their drug operation, and how they handle the enemies they have no doubt gained. There is also potential for Johnston to come back into their lives after his prison stint, too.

Has The Gentlemen been renewed for season 2?

The Gentlemen has set up a second season nicely, but there is no news yet on its renewal. (Netflix)

To this question the answer is simple, nothing has yet been said about a potential second season for The Gentlemen, and a renewal will likely depend on how well season 1 performs on Netflix.

Ritchie currently has a number of projects in the pipeline, there is The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare which releases later this year and a secret untitled project that he is said to be in post-production with. The director has also announced he's making a spin-off for Ray Donovan, and he is in pre-production for two movies: Aladdin 2 and Fountain of Youth.

Where and how The Gentlemen's potential second season could fit into that schedule is unclear, but Netflix is likely to confirm the show's future in due course. The streaming platform tends to announce renewals around a month after a show has been released, and sometimes earlier if the series is particularly popular.

The Gentlemen is available to watch now on Netflix.
