Local songstress Kitty Key has made it to the next round of American Idol, and her Golden Ticket is taking her straight to Hollywood. Originally, Kitty and her sister, Charley, auditioned as Kit + Char with the Cam song “Diane,” but unfortunately Kitty was pushed through solo after singing Rascal Flatt’s song “Here Comes Goodbye.” Although Kitty’s audition didn’t air, she is thrilled for the opportunity to sing for the judges in California.

Kitty wrote on her Instagram over the weekend, “We auditioned as a duo, but ultimately American Idol is a solo competition. What an incredible thing to experience as sisters. Our goal was to shine the light of Christ by showcasing sisters that love and support each other unconditionally.” The two have been performing together since they were very young, and they have made quite the mark on the Columbus music scene.

Kitty remains humble through it all, saying in the video she posted on social media, “Honestly, this is so surreal, and it feels like a dream still. This represents all the hard work I’ve put into becoming an artist.” This is more remarkable than it seems on the surface, as Kitty went through a throat illness that left her unable to sing for quite some time. In fact, she thought she may never be able to sing again, but here she is, auditioning for one of the most competitive singing shows in America.

She is up against some pretty stiff competition, if the auditions are any indication. The March 24 episode featured a lot of really talented performers, including the 14-year-old daughter of a reality-TV veteran. Juan Pablo Galavis, controversial former Bachelor lead, accompanied his daughter as she sang “Rabia” by fellow Venezuelan artist Joaquina.

Kitty and Charley weren’t the only sisters there, as Jacy and Mia Matthews auditioned separately singing Kris Kristofferson’s “Help Me Make It Through The Night” and “No Place So Far” by Sara Evans respectively. The judges were divided on these two, commenting on how timid they were but they ultimately sent them through to Hollywood.
