Texas signee Reese Leitao cleared to join team after drug charges reduced
Texas signee Reese Leitao is allowed to join the team and enroll at the school after reaching a plea deal to cut the drug charges he was facing to misdemeanors.
Leitao, the son of DePaul basketball coach Dave Leitao, was arrested at the end of February after allegedly attempting to sell Xanax at his high school in Oklahoma.
“We’ve reviewed and discussed at length the circumstances surrounding our football signee Reese Leitao,” Texas athletic director Mike Perrin said in a statement. After considerable reflection, I have decided to allow him to be a part of our program. Based on several discussions with people who know Reese well as a person both on and off the field, he’s been a good student, highly- regarded teammate and leader among his peers. All indications are that he’s a young man with a history of good character and behavior who made a poor decision. I recently met with Reese and his parents and found him to be contrite, sincere and accountable for his actions. He has taken ownership of his mistake and the consequences that come with it.”
At the time of Leitao’s arrest Texas said it would be patient and let the legal process unfold before making a decision on his status. Leitao accepted a plea deal last week that reduced the accusations from a felony to misdemeanor.
At the time of his arrest, Leitao had a Xanax pill in his backpack and over $1,300 in cash.
A four-star recruit in the class of 2017, Leitao was the No. 11 tight end in the country according to Rivals. Per Orangebloods, Leitao should be on campus in time for the first summer class sessions.
