Texas to Require Sonograms Before Abortions

Texas Governor Rick Perry will likely sign into law a Texas bill that would require women seeking an abortion to get a sonogram, "hear a description of the fetus, including whether it has developed fingers, toes or internal organs," and then wait for 24 hours, according to the Wall Street Journal. "We believe that when they see the miracle of life some will change their minds," Republican State Senator Dan Patrick, who sponsored the legislation, told the Wall Street Journal.  Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights, said the bill "discounts women's ability to make health decisions and interferes with the doctor-patient relationship." her group sued to block a similar law in Oklahoma last year, and plans to do the same in Texas.
