Texas primary runoff election 2024: What you need to know before voting in May

Many Texan politicians are going into overtime, or rather, they’re going into a primary runoff election on May 28.

Here's what to know about the runoff election:

When is the Texas primary runoff election?

The Texas runoff election is on May 28, 2024. The early voting begins on May 20 and ends on May 24.

For voters planning to vote by mail, you must apply for the ballot through Ballot by Mail or Federal Postcard Applications. The deadline for mail-in ballot applications is May 17.

What is a runoff election?

According to Rock the Vote, a candidate must win a plurality and majority of votes (more than 50% of the vote) to be considered a winner in their primary. Some states have a threshold lower than 50% that the winning candidate must reach, or the state may hold a runoff if two candidates tie.

Can voters who did not vote in the general election vote in the runoff election?

As long as the person is registered to vote, yes you can vote in the runoff election. It’s treated as a new election. To prepare for a runoff election, voters should know about the following:

  • Check registration status

  • Sign up for election reminders

  • Know where you can vote

  • Make sure you're registered to vote

  • If a voter voted absentee, they must request an absentee ballot — even if they voted absentee for the General Election before Texas’ deadline.
