Texas missionary dies in crash, Madera man arrested: CHP

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A Texas Missionary is dead following a vehicle crash, and a Madera man has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, the California Highway Patrol says.

Officers were dispatched to a report of a three-car collision south of Easton Saturday night around 8:30 p.m. in the area of Highway 41 and Manning Avenue.

They say they arrived to find two non-responsive patients at the scene after a pickup rear-ended two vehicles that were stopped at a red light.

Investigators say a Ford F250 was traveling in a northern direction on Highway 41, just south of Manning Avenue, when it rear-ended a Nissan Sentra.  The force of the collision pushed the Sentra into the back end of the Chevrolet Camaro in front of it.

As a result of the impact, the driver of the Sentra sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.  The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office has identified her as 65-year-old Mary Hardin of Helotes, Texas.  Her husband, 69-year-old Paul Hardin, was the passenger in the Sentra and he received major injuries. The sheriff’s office says the couple is in the Fresno area from Texas, serving as missionaries with the Mormon church.

The sole occupant of the Camaro, 31-year-old Mark Anthony Rivera of Fresno, received minor injuries.

The CHP identifies the driver of the F250 as David Alvarado, 54-years-old, of Madera. He is said to have received minor injuries in the crash.

All three men were transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Officers say Alvarado was arrested and booked for suspicion of driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Fresno-area CHP office at (559) 705-2200.
