Texas man crosses border to win $100,000 Arkansas lottery prize

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – People may think everything is bigger in Texas, but one Lone Star resident learned the prizes may be better on the Natural State side of the state line after a recent lottery win.

Officials with the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery said Wednesday that James Clayton of Texarkana, Texas, claimed a $100,000 instant win prize on April 1.

Clayton, who said he was a twice-weekly lottery player on “the Texas side” of Texarkana, told ASL officials he decided to mix it up and bought two $5 tickets at the E-Z Mart on North State Line Avenue, winning back $5 on one ticket.

Rather than just keeping the cash, he bought an ASL 50X the Win ticket. Scratching it off in his truck, Clayton said he thought he might get a small prize until he realized he had hit the jackpot.

“I didn’t really know how to handle it,” he said of the $100,000 top prize. “That’s a lot of money.”

Too nervous to go back inside the store, Clayton said he waited until a worker came outside to have her double check that he had won. After that, he headed home to surprise his wife.

“I went home and tried to be cool and casual,” Clayton recalled. “Then I just said, ‘Hey, look at this ticket.’”

Monday saw another big Arkansas Scholarship Lottery winner. ASL officials said a $50,000 Powerball ticket was sold at the Divine Gas on Highway 49 in Paragould, adding that the winning-ticket holder has 180 days to claim their prize.

Wednesday could see a historic win for Powerball players, with the estimated jackpot climbing to a whopping $1.09 BILLION, the fourth-highest Powerball jackpot in the game’s history.
