Texas GOP candidate opposes easier equal pay suits
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A campaign spokesman says Texas Republican gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott would veto a measure to make it easier for women to bring pay discrimination lawsuits in state court.
It is an issue that dogged Abbott, the state's current attorney general, who had previously refused to take a position on the issue.
Abbott's spokesman Matt Hirsch says discrimination against women over wages is already against the law, so the candidate would not support additional measures.
Hirsch earlier stopped short of saying Abbott would have vetoed the act but later clarified that he would. Current Gov. Rick Perry did that last year when Abbott's Democratic rival in the governor's race, Fort Worth state Sen. Wendy Davis, shepherded a state version through the Republican-controlled Legislature.
