Texas college baseball coach doesn't recruit Colorado players, cites fear of failed drug tests

Log this one under today’s sign that America’s culture war is out of control.

An email from the baseball coach at Texas Wesleyan, a small private university in Fort Worth founded by the Methodist Episcopal church, has been posted on Twitter and gone viral.

The message from longtime coach Mike Jeffcoat appears to be a rejection letter to a prospective student athlete named Gavin from Colorado.

It also appears to be a joke.

Alas, it is not.

The Houston Chronicle confirmed on Wednesday that the baseball coach who told a kid from Colorado he would not consider recruiting him because marijuana is legal in his home state is the real deal.

“We’re definitely aware of the email sent out by our baseball coach and the comments he made are in no way a reflection of Texas Wesleyan University, its values or its recruiting practices,” Texas Wesleyan representative John Veilleux said. “This is a personnel matter and it is currently under investigation. We follow due process here. It is our university policy to not discuss personnel matters.”

The university also posted the message on its Twitter page with a note that it does not condone discrimination.

Jeffcoat had a 10-year career as an MLB pitcher and has led Texas Wesleyan to a 529-358-1 record since 2002.

He also dislikes liberals and weed.
