Surveys and studies conducted have demonstrated how men’s health has now been severely impacted and deteriorated compared to the past few decades. Diabetes, cardiovascular ailments and mental illness are now a part of every household.

Men in particular, especially those over 50 years of age have been reported to be affected by different life-threatening conditions, which have now put a heavy impact on their quality of life. Loss of energy and libido, elevated stress levels and prominent weight gain is common among elderly men. Studies suggest that this could be the result of a decline in testosterone levels.

Further research conducted revealed shocking results – men in their 60’s had nearly half the amount of testosterone than they had during their youth. This loss of testosterone is clearly responsible for loss of libido, and also, in some cases, thought to be responsible of homosexuality.

Lack of testosterone

Several other health issues tend to arise due to a lack of the hormone testosterone. Some of them are listed below.

  • Alzheimer’s disease

  • Loss of sexual function

  • Type 2 diabetes

  • Development of fat deposits

  • Decrease in muscle mass

  • Loss of bone mineral density

  • Heart attacks

  • Strokes

Testosterone Replacement Therapy

That’s when Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) comes into play. This new therapy, much similar to the estrogen replacement therapy for women, can work wonders in alleviating osteoporosis, heart attacks and depression. It may not exactly be the fountain of youth, but Testosterone Replacement Therapy promises to improve heart health, muscle buildup and remove stress and depression.

Although estrogen replacement therapy has faced severe criticism from the skeptics, it is not the case with Testosterone Replacement Therapy. Earlier beliefs that the hormone testosterone could be responsible for the development of prostate cancer and affect the heart and circulation has been shunned, now that there’s enough evidence to support otherwise.

Types of Testosterone Replacement Therapy

The best way to check if this Testosterone Replacement Therapy is good for you is to first get your testosterone levels checked. A simple blood test will be enough to determine if your body is lacking this vital hormone.

You could then, choose from different cost-effective treatments like getting injections twice a week, or you could opt for pills, gels and skin patches to keep up your hormone levels. Before considering getting the Testosterone Replacement Therapy, it’s important to consult your doctor about which therapy would be best suited to your needs.

Oral testosterone therapy: Your doctor would recommend two daily doses for about two to three weeks. However, long-term treatment of oral testosterone therapy is not recommended by even doctors as you might be at a higher risk of developing heart and liver problems.

Testosterone therapy through injections: Injecting supplement testosterone is said to be a more safe and effective method and is given once in two weeks.

Testosterone gel: The gel is applied to your shoulder, upper arm or lower abdomen, daily.

Testosterone patch: The testosterone patch is applied every night on your thigh, abdomen, back or upper arm. The site of the application should be changed once a week in order to stop the skin from developing infections.

Buccal testosterone patch: This tiny tablet-shaped patch is attached to your gum which takes the testosterone directly into your blood stream. It is usually applied twice daily – in the morning and evening.
