Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk is known for expressing some rather colorful opinions and far out predictions, but his latest might be his most interesting.

In an Interview with the BBC, Musk confirmed that he believes Apple is working on producing a car.

"I encourage more participation by whoever it is," said Musk, when first asked about a possible Apple Car. "It's quite hard to do. But I think companies like Apple will probably make a compelling electric car. It seems like the obvious thing to do."

But that kind of subtle vague-speak is exactly what the BBC is great at piercing through, so the interviewer asks Musk the question more directly: "Are you betting that [an Apple Car is] going to happen? Have you heard anything?"

"It's pretty hard to hide something if you hire over a thousand engineers to do it," said Musk, again attempting to keep his answer as pleasantly opaque as possible. But the interviewer pressed on for a real answer, and he got it.

"Do you think Apple is serious about [building an Apple Car]?"

"Yes, I do," Musk said. "It's an open secret."

So there you have it, finally, from one of the most connected executives in the electric car industry. If Musk is to be believed (and why shouldn't he be?), an Apple Car is definitely in the works.

Of course, unless Musk has insider information he isn't disclosing, this could just be speculation on his part. Furthermore, it could be that Apple is simply building a prototype to help it understand how to better serve the software and hardware needs of the current automotive players.

All that said, whatever the purpose of the Apple Car, it's hard not to take the word of a man who is known for delivering on some pretty big technological bets.

Therefore, armed with this new tip from the largest figure in electric vehicles, it's time to take the Apple Car seriously. And it could just be a matter time before we see that iconic white glowing Apple logo cruising the streets of our cities, carrying behind it possibly the most technologically advanced electric car we've ever seen.
