During a conference call on Tuesday, SolarCity chairman Elon Musk spoke about his plans to revolutionize the use of solar power. “It’s not a thing on the roof, it’s the roof,” said Musk, whose words quickly caused a buzz among investors and the general public. If successful, Musk's vision for solar roofs would revolutionize the way in which modern homes are built. The news is well timed, as SolarCity recently reported a quarterly loss of $250 million. By offering an alternative to one of the major components of a home, Musk would open the door to hundreds of millions of new customers. Earlier this month, SolarCity accepted Tesla’s offer to purchase the company for $2.6 billion. Tesla, of course, is the U.S. automotive company where Musk has served as CEO for the past TK years. The brand’s name has become synonymous with innovation, as the company has broken the mold of the modern fuel-consuming car with its luxurious all-electric vehicles.

Since its founding in 2006, SolarCity has become America’s leading solar provider by efficiently clipping panels to the top of buildings. Although the estimated cost for a solar roof has not been announced, it can be assumed it will be pricier than a traditional roof. The challenge for Musk and his colleagues at SolarCity will be to ensure weary homeowners that the long-term savings will make it worth their while.
