Tesla Eliminating Some Model S and Model X Options after November 1
Tesla’s five interior color combinations on the Model S and Model X are whittling down, likely to just two.
Former CEO Elon Musk, less than 24 hours after posting pictures of anime cartoon characters, wrote on Twitter that to "simplify production, many Tesla Model S & X interior configs, will no longer be available after Nov 1. Order now to be sure of the one you want." Without elaboration, Musk probably means that these two models will be available only with the same "premium" black and black/white interiors as on the Model 3, which both feature Tesla's leatherette.
Currently, on the online order forms for the S and X, Tesla offers beige headliners with all-black leatherette seats and dash trim, a beige/black combo that brightens the lower dash panels, center console and seats, and an all-black cloth interior. All of these combos will probably be out. Both cars also offer light and black-stained ash, oak, and on the X, carbon fiber. The Model 3 has no such trimmings.
The Tesla Model S, introduced in 2012, is Tesla's second model, following the original Roadster; the seven-passenger Model X came next, in 2015. The simplification plan as announced on Twitter does not include the Model 3.
Tesla interiors are already restrictive and rich in cost savings. There are no full leather interiors (since 2017, a change some vegan shareholders demanded), no contrast stitching, or many of the other lavish furnishings found in $100,000 luxury cars. The Model S still has no front map pockets, and every Tesla steering wheel is black. Tesla’s upper and lower door trim, along with the upper dash, is black regardless of color choice. Fit and finish have also been criticized as below the standard of other cars in its price category. Yet none of this, not even deleting colors, appears ready to stop Tesla’s momentum in the market.
