Terry Sabers entering Mitchell's mayoral race, while McCardle decides to seek re-election on council

Mar. 8—MITCHELL — A new candidate has entered Mitchell's mayoral race.

Terry Sabers, the former co-president of Muth Electric, confirmed Friday that he is running for mayor.

Sabers said he plans to file his nominating petition on Monday. With Sabers entering the race, the field of mayoral candidates on the June 4 ballot grows to three.

Mayor Bob Everson and Jordan Hanson, a local real estate developer, have filed their petitions. Everson is eyeing a third mayoral term, while Hanson and Sabers are eyeing a first term.

Additional candidates could emerge over the next three weeks, as nominating petitions for the mayoral race and three city council seats must be submitted by 5 p.m. on March 26.

Mitchell City Council President Kevin McCardle confirmed Friday that he is not entering the mayoral race.

During a February council meeting, McCardle indicated he was heavily considering running for mayor. While McCardle had a mayoral petition circulating over the past few days, he decided to seek re-election for his council seat.

"After talking with my family, I felt it wasn't the right time to run for mayor. I really enjoy serving on the council and hope to continue serving another term," McCardle said.

State election laws prohibit a candidate from running for mayor and council in the same election cycle. With that in mind, McCardle was mulling over whether to run for mayor or seek re-election for the Ward 2 council seat.

McCardle has represented Ward 2 on the council since 2018. As of Friday, no nominating petitions for the Ward 2 council seat were filed. McCardle has yet to file his council petition since deciding against running for mayor.
