All-terrain wheelchairs to increase trail accessibility in Aurora

DENVER (KDVR) — The City of Aurora is now offering all-terrain wheelchairs to help people with mobility problems have the opportunity to explore and enjoy local trails.

The Action Trackchair is an all-terrain wheelchair that allows people to enjoy hiking trails and nature adventures, according to a release from the city.

“The city of Aurora’s Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department is taking an inclusive approach to encouraging active lifestyles and ensuring everyone has equal access to the wonders of nature in Aurora,” the city said in a release.

According to the Action Trackchair website, the all-terrain wheelchairs go through rigorous tests designed to break the chair to ensure the chair’s durability is up to the test. The track chairs are equipped with a torsion arm suspension system with automatic track tensioning allowing users to tackle rugged terrain.

The city said one Aurora resident, Melissa Chaves, used one of the all-terrain wheelchairs for her son at Star K Ranch.

“It just opens the door to have fun as a family together; I’m just really grateful that Aurora thought of families like ours,” Chaves said.

People can reserve the chairs for free year-round, and they can be used at the Plains Conservation Center, located at 21901 E. Hampden Ave., and Star K Ranch, located at 16002 E. Smith Rd.

The chairs have a maximum weight limit of 300 lbs. Additionally, users can secure car seats or boosters to the chair for those who need it.

Chair rentals are limited to two hours of use. The city noted that it is unable to accommodate walk-up users at this time, and reservations must be made ahead of time.

Those interested in using the chairs are asked to fill out a form on the city’s website with their preferred dates.

The chairs will be available during most business hours at both locations, but they are not available on Mondays or Tuesdays.
