FREMONT — For one Terra State Community College student, an upcoming raffle could lead to a year of free tuition.

Cory Stine, Terra State's senior vice president of innovation and strategic planning, said the college will hold its free tuition raffle the first week of August.

Stine said every student registered for 12 or more credit hours of fall classes by July 31 will be automatically eligible to be awarded one year of free tuition, courtesy of a Terra Foundation scholarship, for both the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters.

The scholarship will be worth up to $5,000.

Stine said the raffle is an effort to boost Terra State's fall enrollment numbers.

The college's goal is to enroll 2,218 students this fall, with a full-time equivalent (FTE) student number of 563.3.

That would represent a 10% increase from Terra State's fall 2021 final enrollment numbers.

Inflation, gas prices affecting Terra enrollment decisions

So far this summer, 1,204 students have registered for fall 2022 classes, down about 35 students from the same time last year, Stine said.

"At this point, I'm still confident," Stine said of Terra State reaching its 10% enrollment goal.

Based on feedback from the college's academic advisers and admissions staff, Stine said there's still a lot of uncertainty among students as they consider whether to enroll in classes, with inflation and higher gas prices among the factors they're facing outside of school.

Terra State has financial aid and other assistance available for students, Stine noted.

Stine said the college has held previous raffles involving scholarships, books and iPads.

The college will also be offering free textbooks and access codes for full-time students that are taking 12 or more credit hours through the Follett ACCESS program at the Titan Shop bookstore on campus, according to the college.

Free textbooks and access codes extended

This offer is for both returning and new students enrolled in the fall of 2022 semester.

Terra State has extended the free textbooks and access codes promotion for student success and completion with available institution funds through the CARES Act.

Students will receive a nearly $400 discount on books through the Follett ACCESS program.

These textbooks and access codes can be picked up or ordered online through the Titan Shop bookstore.
