- Former champion Andy Murray laboured past Robin Haase 6-3, 7-6 (8/6), 1-6, 7-5 on a steamy Louis Armstrong stadium Monday to reach the US Open second round.

The eighth-seeded Scot, who hasn't reached a final since he won Wimbledon in 2013, appeared to be struggling in the 84-degree (29 C) heat as he dropped the third set, and twice fought back from a break down in the fourth before finishing off the unseeded Dutch number one.

Murray next plays German qualifier Matthias Bachinger, a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 winner over Czech Radek Stepanek.
