- Second seed Kevin Anderson needed three sets while French grass-court specialist Nicolas Mahut scored the biggest upset at the ATP Tour's Winston-Salem Open on Tuesday, a final US Open tune-up.
South Africa's Anderson eventually toppled Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 on the hardcourts at Wake Forest University.
"I feel like I’m playing great tennis," said Anderson. "It's just about getting out there and competing well. Matches can often go up and down."
France's Mahut ousted the third-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo, who beat world number one Novak Djokovic in Cincinnati last week, 6-1, 7-6 (7/0).
"I’m pretty happy about the way I played today, especially at the beginning," said Mahut. "I knew he was coming from a tough week in Cincinnati.
