Tennessee State LB Christion Abercrombie is set to leave Vanderbilt Hospital. The school said Tuesday that Abercrombie would be discharged Wednesday after being hospitalized since sustaining a severe head injury against Vanderbilt on Sept. 29.

Abercrombie was recently upgraded to stable condition from critical. He had been listed as critical and had been breathing with help from a ventilator. He was taken off the ventilator over the weekend and is being discharged to Shepherd Center in Atlanta, a rehabilitation center that focuses on patients’ recoveries from brain injuries.

Tennessee State coach Rod Reed called the events of the last few days a “miracle.”

“It just shows the power of God,” Reed said in a school statement. “This is, in my opinion, a miracle that he’s being discharged after such a traumatic experience. Thank you for all of those who sent up prayers. We’re looking forward to a speedy recovery.”

Abercrombie’s mom Staci requested people to keep praying for her son.

“We thank everyone for their love, support and prayers … keep praying,” she said.

Abercrombie injured during a typical football play

The Illinois transfer was rushed to the hospital during the game after collapsing on the sideline. Reed said Abercrombie had taken on a block and then came to the sideline after the play. He complained to the training staff that he had a headache and then collapsed.

The Shepherd Center also specializes in the rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injuries. Southern wide receiver Devon Gales was transferred there after he suffered a spinal cord injury against Georgia in 2015.
