Temporary traffic calming installation coming to east Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The City of Bakersfield will be installing a temporary traffic-calming treatment at two intersections in east Bakersfield in effort to make both intersections safer for pedestrians and bicyclists in the neighborhood.

According to a social media post from Bakersfield Ward 2 City Council member Andrae Gonzales, the traffic-calming treatments will be at the intersection of Niles Street and Beale Avenue and Monterey Street and Beale Avenue.

The treatment is part of the city’s Niles-Monterey (NiMo) Prosperity Neighborhood Project.

The city held the first NiMo Summit in June 2022. Hundreds of east Bakersfield residents attended the meeting and voiced their top concern, which was calming traffic in the area. Since then, the City has been working on a design to improve the Niles St. and Monterey St. corridor by adding pedestrian-level- lighting, sidewalks and an enhanced tree covering.

Councilmember Gonzales said he spent an hour at both intersections and received valuable feedback.
