An undersea telecommunications cable between Sweden and Estonia has been damaged, Swedish Civil Defense Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin said on Oct. 17, as reported by The Guardian.

The minister suggested that the incident occurred on Oct. 8, coinciding with the damage to the Balticconnector, an undersea natural gas pipeline that connects Finland and Estonia.

Officials in Helsinki did not rule out the possibility of “state actor” involvement, given the “significant deterioration” of relations with Russia.

On Oct. 10, seismologists from the private research institute NORSAR in Norway announced they had detected signs of an explosion in the Baltic Sea near Finland on the night the Balticconnector was damaged.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that if evidence of a deliberate attack emerges, the Alliance members will provide a "decisive response."
