Telecom Italia hit with big fine; Italy's antitrust body alleges it abused market dominance
ROME (AP) -- Italy's antitrust agency has fined Telecom Italia €103.79 million euros ($134.8 million), alleging that the Italian telecommunications company abused its dominant market position.
The agency said Friday that a two-year investigation found that Telecom Italia abused its dominant position in the supply of local network and broadband access service to wholesalers, thus hampering market expansion by competitors. It added that the company's discount policy was unfair to competition.
Telecom Italia said it would appeal the decision, "confident" that it could "prove the fairness of its practices." It said it has always assured alternative operators "full and equal access to its network."
