Tejon Ranch fire swallows 121 acres

Kern firefighters were dispatched early Monday morning to a 121-acre grass fire near Tejon Ranch.

According to a news release from the Kern County Fire Department, the fire scorched “waist-high” along dry grass in an area south of Laval Road, spreading quickly because of a gust coming down the slope of a nearby mountain range.

Several aircraft were used to extinguish the flames. After some time, a second fire was spotted further up the mountain, during which aircraft personnel spotted a person near it. Investigators later arrested the unidentified person in connection with the fire.

The fire was about 40% contained as of 4 p.m. Monday, according to the release.
