Teen’s Dad Missed Her Prom Pictures Because of Work — So She Got Ready Again Just for Him

Prom is a monumental occasion for many high school students, but sometimes parents aren’t able to see their children off to the big dance because of work commitments. One high school student went the extra mile so her father could take photos with her in her prom dress.

Lourdes Medrano, an 18-year-old student at Everett Alvarez High School in Salinas, Calif., shared a photo on May 7 posing in her prom dress for the second time — and the reason is spreading the post like wildfire across the Twitterverse.

“My dad works so much and he didn’t get to see me before prom yesterday, so I got ready again today since he was upset about no pictures,” she captioned the photo.

Medrano tells Yahoo Style that it was important for her to allow her father to see her prom look.

“Since my dad works 24/7 at times, he hasn’t been around for certain events — and even though it may not seem like a big deal to others, it was [important] to me for him to see me ready in my prom outfit,” she says, also pointing out the fact that her father paid for her dress.

Twitter users couldn’t get over the kindness of the act.

Medrano says that her father was thrilled by her gesture. “My dad was happy — although his face may not really show it — that’s just how he is in pictures,” she shares. Other users on Twitter replied to her tweet with their own photos to show that their fathers have similar expressions when the camera is on them.

Medrano says that the pair have a special bond. “I appreciate him more than he thinks,” she shares.

Since being posted on Sunday, her tweet has amassed more than 51,000 retweets and almost 360,000 likes. The high school senior says she really didn’t expect her tweet to go viral.

“I honestly am still super shocked it has gotten to this point,” she says. “It all basically happened overnight. Many people have actually shared touching stories with me about their dads or how my tweet made them think about their fathers who had passed, which was really touching to me.”

Along with the positive feedback that came from the tweet, Medrano also received some negative messages from those suggesting she posted the tweet for attention.

“I am trying to avoid those people online as much as I can,” she says. “I know that I mainly posted this for my dad and nothing else.”
