Teens allegedly set woods on fire in Washington County to cover up smuggling attempt

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF) – Two teens are facing charges after allegedly trying to cover up a smuggling attempt by starting a fire in the woods just outside of Davisboro.

Washington County Deputies responded to reports of suspicious individuals on Sparta Davisboro Road on Thursday, February 29.

Once there, they found a vehicle with Tennessee plates and a juvenile female in the driver’s seat. Two males subjects, now identified as 18-year-olds Travis Smith and Bryant Thaxton of Grayson, Georgia, then reportedly fled into the woods. K9 units were called in to apprehend the two teens.

Georgia Forestry and local firefighters were also dispatched after a forest fire was discovered at the location. Investigators say the fire was set to destroy contraband that was intended to be smuggled into Washington State Prison.

Smith and Bryant were both arrested and charged with Felony Criminal Attempt of Trading with Inmates, Misdemeanor Criminal Trespass and Felony Burning of Woodlands or Other Lands. Further charges may be forthcoming.

The case remains under investigation.
