Teen fatally shot in the head on SoHo street: NYPD

SOHO, Manhattan (PIX11) — A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot in the head in an alley on a SoHo street Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The teen was also shot in the leg outside 233 Spring St. near Varick Street at around 2:30 p.m., according to the NYPD. The victim, Mahki Brown, was rushed to the hospital but could not be saved.

Authorities said two groups of teenage girls were fighting in the alley of Urban Plaza near Broome Street Academy Charter High School before shots rang out. The girls called a group of boys for backup and Brown was killed during the skirmish, according to sources.

“All I heard was a gunshot, pop, pop. Twice,” Foster Sarbong, who works across the street from the shooting scene, told PIX11 News.

He then ducked behind several cars as people nearby were running away.

Thomas Libonati, who lives in the neighborhood, said at school dismissal time, the park is filled with teens from the nearby Broome Street Academy Charter School and the Chelsea Career and Technical Education High School.

“Kids being kids, but it’s unfortunate someone had to get hurt; even worse, the guy died,” Libonati said.

Police are searching for two suspects who may have fled the scene on CitiBikes, police said. There have been no arrests.

The shooting comes as the NYPD released April crime data touting shootings were down 15% citywide compared to the same time last year, authorities said. There were 60 shootings last month, down from 71 in April 2023, the data shows.

There were three shootings in Manhattan on Monday, including a man who was shot in the face on West 154th Street, and two women were injured when gunfire erupted on 144th Street in Harlem, police said.
