Cashier critically injured in stabbing, robbery at west Fort Worth Kroger store

A woman was in critical condition Wednesday afternoon after she was stabbed during a robbery attempt at the Kroger store where she works in west Fort Worth, officials said.

Fort Worth police officers responded to the Kroger at 9114 Camp Bowie W. Blvd. shortly after noon. A man entered the grocery store and tried to rob one of the cashiers, according to police.

The suspect stabbed the victim in the abdomen several times, police said. A spokesperson for MedStar confirmed that the victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Authorities initially described the victim as a teenager but later said she is a woman in her 20s.

The suspect has been taken into custody, according to Fort Worth police. His name has not been released.

The investigation is still active, and police said they will provide an update once more details become available.

John Votava, a Kroger spokesperson, said the company is keeping the store closed until police have finished their investigation there. When the store does reopen, the armed security at the location will be extended from just evenings to being present from open to close, he said.

“We are working in full cooperation with local law enforcement and our store will remain closed until they conclude their investigation,” Votava told the Star-Telegram in an emailed statement. “The entire Kroger family offers our thoughts, prayers and support to our associate and their family.”

Tiffany McCoy, who worked as a cashier at that Kroger store for a few months in 2023, said she often worried for her safety.

“I had an overall feeling of not being safe,” she told the Star-Telegram in a telephone interview.

One day McCoy heard some people who were fighting inside the store threaten to shoot each other, she said. They walked between the cash registers and through the store yelling and cursing at each other. After leaving the store they continued to fight in the parking lot.

McCoy said the incident really upset her, and she didn’t feel like the store’s management took security seriously. According to McCoy, Fort Worth police officers worked security at the store over the weekend during the time she was employed there, but not during the week.

Other commenters on social media also raised safety concerns.

“I get harassed for money almost Everytime I go there,” one person posted on social media. “Kroger needs to supply better security for it’s customers. SICK!!!”

“I’ve shopped there a few times, got out as fast as I could,” a woman posted. “That whole area needs to be fixed.”
