Team of the Week: Pewamo-Westphalia lives for the dramatics

WESTPHALIA, Mich. (WLNS) – On Thursday, the Pewamo-Westphalia boys basketball team had its stellar season come to an end in the regional championship game.

The Pirates lost to Grand Rapids Covenant Christian, 46-45, but it doesn’t take away from a memorable week they put together.

In the district title game against Maple Valley, P-W was playing without leading scorer Grady Eklund and still went on to win 59-42.

Four days later, in the regional semifinals against undefeated North Muskegon, senior Kash Pohl hit the shot of a lifetime.

“I honestly thought the ball was going in. It had that flight on it, and I’m like, ‘No way,'” Pirates coach Dominic Schneider said.

With time ticking down in overtime, Pohl hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer.

“Last year I missed a buzzer-beater and luckily Jam(ison) Eklund came out of the air to save the day. So, I was happy to see one go down,” Pohl said.

Jamison Eklund, who graduated in 2023, hit game-winning shots at the buzzer in back-to-back postseason runs for the Pirates, who live for the dramatics.

“We had a conversation in the coach’s office (on Monday) and said ‘When is that luck going to run out?’ Luckily, it wasn’t (Tuesday),” Schneider said. “Kash took it upon himself to go win the game.”

The Pirates finished the season with a 23-3 record.
