Teacher of the Month: Alyssa Passmore

SHAWNEE, Kan. — Have you ever wished you could be an artist? FOX4’s Teacher of the Month for May says you already are.

Alyssa Passmore teaches visual art at Hocker Grove Middle in the Shawnee Mission School District.

Passmore, an Overland Park native, grew up loving art and wanting to teach. But she says she was told the pay wasn’t great, so she tried out graphic design.

“I’m not a perfectionist and it’s not really how my brain works,” Passmore said. “I didn’t end up staying in that major past my freshman year.”

She then decided to pursue an art education degree and began her education career upon graduation. Passmore has been teaching for the last 11 years and joined the staff at Hocker Grove in 2017.

Passmore teaches her students that everyone can create art, and it’s not about whether the art is “good” or “bad.” It’s about feeling good while making the art.

“Even though it’s not a tested subject, I think art belongs in every child’s life and in every school,” Passmore said.

A parent of one of Miss Passmore’s students nominated her for the impact she’s had on her daughter.

“Being with kids I feel is the greatest investment that we can put into the future,” Passmore said. “And art provides them an opportunity to express themselves and figure out their identity, which is so important in middle school.”

For being chosen as FOX4’s Teacher of the Month, Miss Passmore wins $750 in gift cards from Volkswagen of Lee’s Summit. To nominate your favorite teacher, click here.
