Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez Show Support for the March for Our Lives on Instagram

"No one should have to go to school in fear of gun violence.”

March for Our Lives just got support from two celebrities who don't often make overtly political statements: Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez. On Friday, the two singers (and close friends) took to their respective Instagram accounts to back the student-led rally against gun violence, which is planned to take place on Saturday (March 24) in Washington, D.C., and over 800 joint events worldwide.

"No one should have to go to school in fear of gun violence. Or to a nightclub. Or to a concert. Or to a movie theater. Or to their place of worship," Taylor wrote, captioning a copy of the March for Our Lives poster. "I’ve made a donation to show my support for the students, for the March for Our Lives campaign, for everyone affected by these tragedies, and to support gun reform. I’m so moved by the Parkland high school students, faculty, by all families and friends of victims who have spoken out, trying to prevent this from happening again."

Meanwhile, Selena kept her message succinct but powerful. "Protect kids, not guns! #MarchForOurLives" she wrote, posting the March for Our Lives poster as well.

These statements are significant moves for both singers, who tend to stay out of politics. Taylor is famously quiet about political issues, to the point that she's been heavily criticized by some fans, although she set an important example last year when she testified at her own sexual assault trial, winning a symbolic $1 after the jury found a DJ guilty of groping her in 2013. For the most part, Selena has also remained pretty apolitical, her post on DACA and "Nasty Woman" T-shirt at the 2017 Grammys being some of the more explicit statements she had made.

Still, if they're willing to speak out on a topic as important as gun v, then we're all for it. Selena and Taylor aren't the only celebrities taking a stand behind March for Our Lives. While it's unclear whether the two singers will actually attend the march, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Jennifer Hudson, and other stars have pledged to be there. The march, which is organized by survivors of the Parkland, Florida, school shooting in February, has also received sizable donations from big names such as Oprah, Amal and George Clooney, and Gucci. MTV, the NAACP, and a slew of celebrities are also helping send busloads of students to the march.
