Tax allegations at issue in ex-Mayor Nagin's trial
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The defense lawyer for former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin is stressing a lack of wiretap or other recorded evidence as he questions witnesses who say Nagin sought and received bribes during his two terms as mayor.
The trial resumed Wednesday with defense lawyer Robert Jenkins cross-examining Tim Moore, an Internal Revenue Service agent.
Moore on Tuesday had outlined allegations that Nagin failed to report income from various sources on his tax returns, including payments that Moore characterized as bribes.
Jenkins repeatedly noted the lack of voice or video recordings proving that bribes were paid. Nagin, a Democrat who was mayor from 2002 to 2010, faces 21 criminal counts. Charges include bribery, money laundering, conspiracy and filing false tax returns.
