Tarrant County reports 21 COVID deaths, 904 new cases in Thursday spike

Tarrant County reported 21 COVID-19 deaths and 904 new cases on Thursday.

The 21 COVID-related deaths are the most since 23 on Friday.

The latest pandemic-related deaths include a Fort Worth woman in her 20s, a Lake Worth man in his 20s, an Arlington woman in her 30s, three Fort Worth men in their 40s, a Mansfield woman in her 50s, three Fort Worth men in their 50s, a Haltom City woman in her 50s, an Arlington man in his 60s, two Fort Worth men in their 60s, a Burleson man in his 70s, a North Richland Hills man in his 70s, two Haltom City women in their 70s, a Euless woman in her 80s, a Fort Worth woman in her 80s, and a woman from rural Tarrant County in her 80s.

Two of the 21 did not have underlying health conditions, according to officials.

The county has reported 361,915 COVID-19 cases, including 4,697 deaths and an estimated 345,808 recoveries.

Note to readers: Tarrant County does not release data on the vaccination status of recently diagnosed patients or deaths. Officials have released this type of data once in June and it showed that nearly 100% of the new cases reported at the time (from May to mid-June) were in people who were not vaccinated. Further, county officials said fewer than 200 of those new cases at the time were in previously vaccinated Tarrant residents.

COVID-19 hospitalizations

Hospitalized COVID patients increased by 16 to 363 in the latest seven-day moving average. The pandemic high was 1,528 on Jan. 6.

COVID-19 hospitalizations decreased to 8% from 9% of the total number of beds in Tarrant County and make up 9% of the 4,061 occupied beds. The rate was at a pandemic-high 38% on Jan. 10.

Confirmed COVID patients decreased to 6.90% from 7.65% of all available hospital beds in the North Central Texas Trauma Region, which includes 45 counties (divided into three regions). The rate has been below 15% since Oct. 1. The 6.90% is the lowest rate since it was 5.73% on July 20.

Hospital beds

Tarrant County’s hospital bed occupancy remained at 86%, according to county data. Available hospital beds increased by 15 to 661. The pandemic low was 360 on Sept. 20.

ICU beds

Adult ICU bed occupancy decreased to 87% from 92%. The rate was last at a pandemic-high 99% on Oct. 7. Ventilator use increased by 12 to 275. Patients are using 32% of the 869 ventilators in the county.

Positivity rate

The COVID-19 testing positivity rate for Tarrant County increased to 12.10% from 11.59% in the latest available seven-day average data. The rate was last at a pandemic-high 30% on Jan. 7.

Vaccination data

According to Texas Department of State Health Services, 68.46% of Tarrant County residents 12 or older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and 60.82% of residents 12 or older have been fully vaccinated.

DSHS also reports that 88.62% of Tarrant residents 65 or older have received at least one dose, and 82.09% of residents 65 or older have been fully vaccinated.

More than 73.61% of Texas residents 12 or older have received at least one dose, according to DSHS. Fully vaccinated Texas residents 12 or older are at 64.00%.

Tarrant County is offering free COVID-19 vaccines and testing at locations throughout the area.
