Tampa Bay students participate in Grand Prix STEM Day

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — While drivers were busy running laps on the track of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Pete Friday, a large group of local students learned about the connection between science and racing.

The second annual “Team Accelerate Day” is a partnership between the City of St. Pete, Pinellas County Schools and USF St. Pete.

About 75 students from John Hopkins Middle School, Bay Point Middle School, and Thurgood Marshall Fundamental Middle School and 10 students from the St. Pete Parks and Recreation Therapeutic Program participated in the program.

“It makes me happy because I’m getting opportunities and learning new stuff,” sixth-grader Cameron Harris said.

From designing a logo for the Grand Prix, trying virtual reality race simulations, and building a catapult and circuit building, students were able to gain a better understanding of how STEM education relates to racing.
