‘We’re talking about it now’ Uniting to Fight Addiction

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)– People turned the State Capitol lawn into a recovery center in an effort to fight addiction.

The group called Unite to Face Addiction gathered dozens of mid-Michigan organizations to show state lawmakers who are on the front lines when it comes to fighting addiction and where state funding is really going.

Like the opioid settlement money coming into the state– 1.5 billion dollars flowing into Michigan over the next 15 years.

Organizers told 6 News reporter Nate Salazar the goal is to eliminate the stigma that surrounds addiction and aim to improve access to treatment and educate the public on how to prevent substance abuse.

Legislators came out around mid-day yesterday to talk to recovered addicts and see just how many mid-Michigan services are fighting to solve the problem.

“It used to be that people didn’t talk about it, and now we’re talking about it now. When you talk about it people are urged to get help, when you’re not talking about it nobody’s going to want to get help,” said Kathy Reddington, Vice President of Unite to Face Addiction Michigan.

“There’s a lot that’s got to be done to bring awareness and the resources to the people most needed for this,” Scott Masy, President of Unite to Face Addiction said.

50 resource tables were set up for the community to access information and even offered naloxone training.
