Tacoma City Council member Catherine Ushka’s celebration of life has been scheduled

Tacoma residents are invited to celebrate the life of City Council member Catherine Ushka on Thursday.

Ushka died last week at 55. She announced in September 2022 that she had received a stage 3 cervical-cancer diagnosis.

At 2 p.m. on May 23, doors will open at the Eastside Community Center, 1721 E. 56th St, according to a city news release. The memorial service will start at 2:30 p.m. and be live-streamed on the city’s Facebook page, with a reception to follow.

“Council Member Ushka’s family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Oasis Youth Center or the Making a Difference Foundation / Eloise’s Cooking Pot Food Bank,” the city wrote in the news release.

Flags will stay at half-staff from Tuesday through Saturday across city of Tacoma facilities to honor Ushka’s contributions and memory.

Ushka was elected in 2017 to serve on council representing District 4, according to the city’s website. She was appointed deputy mayor in 2022 after securing another term.

Ushka served on the board of Tacoma Public Schools for eight years, including three as president, and was a U.S. Navy veteran. A park was renamed after her last month: Catherine Ushka’s Gas Station Park, 4801 S. Park.
