Tacks create havoc at Tour de France

Tacks thrown onto the road caused havoc in the 14th stage of the Tour de France on Sunday.

At least 30 riders were affected by tire punctures at the top of the final climb as a result of the tacks and small nails, according to the New York Times.

Tour officials asked the police to investigate. According to the Times report, race director Jean-Francois Pescheux said on French television that finding the person responsible would be difficult because thousands of fans lined the road.

Robert Kiserlovski dropped out of the race after breaking his collarbone in an accident related to the tacks.

Defending champion Cadel Evans had to wait three times for assistance after being caught up in the chaos caused by the tacks.

Luis Leon Sanchez won the stage, and Bradley Wiggins held on to the overall lead.
