“I can’t make this up”: Arkansas Shelter rescues dogs, cats in second hoarding case in a week

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The West Memphis Animal Shelter rescued 31 dogs, nine cats, and a rabbit from a small house in West Memphis Tuesday.

It comes a week after the shelter pulled 73 small dogs from home in Hughes, Arkansas.

Shelter director Kerry Facello said the new batch of dogs was found at a 1,200-square home. She was streaming live on Facebook as shelter workers and volunteers unloaded cages of small and large dogs from a van at their facility.

“I can’t make this up, I swear. I’m not making this up,” Facello said, “We go years without doing a hoarding case, and then to have two within a week. I don’t know what we did wrong. I don’t.”

One of the dogs appeared to have injuries to its nose and ears and was still wearing a chain. Facello said another dog was stuck underneath a shed on the property.

“This is Scooter,” Facello said on Facebook. “This is the one we had to dig out from under a storage shed and use a jack to elevate the storage shed.”

Last week, the West Memphis Animals Shelter rescued 73 dogs from a house on Earle Beck Road in Hughes. One of the dogs has since had five puppies.

Three children were also removed from the home, and three adults were arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a minor and animal cruelty.

Saturday, Facello thanked the public for their financial and emotional support and said the dogs, workers, and volunteers were all worn out.

“They were vaccinated yesterday and de-wormed, and they’ve got a lot going through their system,” she said. “The crew, the volunteers — everyone is really, really pooped.”

Facello said the ammonia, fleas, flies, urine, and feces at the West Memphis residence were unbearable. No word on whether any arrests were made in connection with the hoarding case.

This a developing story.
