BEIRUT (AP) — Lebanese security officials say Syria's Foreign Ministry spokesman has left the country and was heading to the U.K.

It was not clear whether Jihad Makdissi had defected from President Bashar Assad's regime.

The officials said Makdissi left Monday on a flight from Beirut.

The security officials asked that their names not be used because they are not authorized to speak publicly.
