Sybrina Fulton, Lucy McBath And More Take The Stage At The #DNC

Mothers who lost their children to gun violence took the stage at the Democratic National Convention to profess their loyalty to Hillary Clinton.

Sybrina Fulton, Gwen Carr, Lucy McBath, and more took to the stage at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday night (July 26) to speak on behalf of their sons and daughters they lost due to gun violence, as well as to show their support for Hillary Clinton.

As the mothers stood on stage, most dressed in black, the convention crowd stood on their feet and chanted “Black Lives Matter! Black Lives Matter!” Sandra Bland’s mother, Geneva Reed-Veal spoke first recalled enduring the pain of burying her daughter. Yet, views her new role in life to speak on behalf of her daughter.

“What a blessing to be standing here tonight so that Sandy can still speak through her momma,” she said.

Lucy McBath, mother to Jordan Davis who was killed in Florida just nine months after Trayvon Martin was gunned down for playing loud music, spoke of her loving relationship with her son, how giving he was and their many deep conversations about God. McBath also emphasized the importance of community and law enforcement collaboration, and said the majority of police officers are good.

The last of the mothers to speak was Sybrina Fulton who made it clear she’s not a part of this club by choice. “I am an unwilling participant in this movement.” Since Trayvon’s death, Fulton has championed for “common sense gun legislation” as well as other young black man, including her oldest son Jahvaris.

As all the mothers left the stage, they left to a standing ovation with many continuing to chant Black Lives Matter.
