Swimming advisory issued for Greens Harbor Beach

Jul. 16—NEW LONDON — Ledge Light Health District is discouraging swimming at Greens Harbor Beach until further notice.

It is the only beach in the city under such an advisory.

The health district tests water samples throughout the district every Monday in the summer season, and during testing on July 12, it found samples from 13 locations contained high levels of enterococcus bacteria.

Jennifer Muggeo, a spokesperson for Ledge Light, said the bacteria levels were likely due to heavy rain the region saw last weekend from Tropical Storm Elsa. "We have every reason to believe that that is why we saw so many locations with elevated levels," she said.

The district retested the 13 locations on Wednesday and samples from Greens Harbor Beach were the only ones to still show high bacteria levels. The advisories or closures at all other beaches were lifted.

Water samples from Greens Harbor Beach will be tested again Monday.
