Sweetwater Homeschool Expo will offer educational resources, tips for interested parents

Feb. 29—For Aiken County residents curious about homeschooling, the Sweetwater Homeschool Expo on March 2 might be able to answer your questions. This event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sweetwater Baptist Church in North Augusta and is free to the public.

Guests can enjoy food trucks like The Pot Smoker BBQ and Dee's Dreams Lemonade, and around 30 booths showcasing educational resources and promoting tutoring and student socialization organizations. The event will feature performances by AAA Homeschool Band and Aiken Saber Academy.

There will also be prize giveaways.

Eight experienced homeschool moms will speak on a variety of topics and will be available to answer any homeschool related questions.

Ashley O'Shields, one of the event's coordinators, said that homeschooling has been steadily growing more popular, but interested parents tend to be overwhelmed as they try to get started.

"As the admin for a local homeschooling Facebook page, we've noticed a rise in memberships of families new to homeschooling. They have many questions," she said. "It can be somewhat intimidating to make this change. We want to provide a free opportunity for families to come and learn more about what is available in our area and give them the tools they need to be encouraged and equipped on this journey."
