Sweden is ready to deploy nuclear weapons on its territory should war break out, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson confirmed.
The deployment of nuclear weapons would not be allowed in peacetime, but the situation would be different in wartime, he said on Sveriges Radio.
"It's a completely different matter in a war situation," he said.
"It will depend entirely on what happens. In a worst-case scenario, democratic countries in our part of the world should be able to defend themselves against countries that might threaten us with nuclear weapons.”

It will be Sweden, not the United States, that will make the final decision on whether to allow nuclear weapons on its territory, he said.
It is important for NATO countries to be able to access nuclear weapons while they are in countries like Russia, he added.
The only countries of the alliance that have their own nuclear weapons are the USA, Great Britain, and France. However, five other NATO members host American nuclear weapons as part of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty - Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Türkiye.
Sweden has no intention of hosting nuclear weapons, Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Björnström said in November 2022.
