Sustainably Speaking: Local business owner wins environmental award

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – A local Green Bay business was recently recognized for its contributions to eliminating food waste headed to our local landfills.

At its annual council banquet, the Clean Water Action Council of Northeast Wisconsin recognized Greener Bay Compost Founder and CEO, Cory Groshek, as its 2024 Environmental Citizen of the Year.

In a press release, the council highlighted Groshek’s commitment to taking food waste from producing harmful methane gas at landfills, taking the food scraps, and turning it into a beneficial soil amendment for gardens and fields.

Groshek explained what it means to him to win this award.

“Winning the Environmental Citizen Award from the Clean Water Action Council of Northeastern Wisconsin is a big deal for us at Greener Bay Compost because it’s a testament to the great work we and our subscribers, both our residential and commercial, have been doing for the last three years,” says Groshek.

Groshek’s business model is making food composting easy, clean, and convenient. For $15 every four weeks or $25 every two weeks, residents can simply discard their food waste into a reusable bucket and based on the plan you chose, Groshek will simply stop by the residence and swap out the bucket for a new, cleaner one.

To date, Groshek has expanded his business to over 200 residential households and eight local business, totaling over 180,000 pounds of food waste taken from landfills. He says this award is a reflection of the shared mission amongst the subscribers to the business.

“The way we see it at Greener Bay Compost is this is a team effort, us and our subscribers together are Greener Bay Compost,” says Groshek. “The work we do with diverting this valuable material from our landfills would not be possible if it wasn’t for the love and the support of all people who have been using our service.”

Greener Bay Compost is continually looking for residents and businesses to add to its subscriber network. To get involved, figure out what is and is not compostable, or purchase the finished soil amendment, that can be found on their website.
