Sustainability on the runway Saturday at Meridian Mall

MERIDIAN TWP., Mich. (WLNS) — Reduce, reuse and recycle–on the runway.

Saturday at the Meridian Mall was a chance for eco-friendly brands to show off what they’ve been working on.

Sustainable living–it’s something we’ve all heard of before–and it applies in fashion, too.

“Everything can be design, and I think that’s more meaningful, to reuse what’s reusable and not waste any materials,” said model Eunseong Jeong.

The show featured environmentally friendly clothing options from all around the community. That includes thrift stores, consignment shops and “upcycling” businesses, among others.

Hannah Long and Sarah Lee are members of Okemos High School’s Earth Club, and their business is called Blue Prints.

“We take thrifted clothes or donated clothes that people no longer want,” said co-founder Long. “Then we create stamps out of linoleum rubber. We carve out designs, then we stamp them on the shirts.”

Long and Lee told 6 News about the importance of wearing sustainable clothing.

“There are so many clothes that are unwanted out there,” said Lee. “And that helps lessen the need for more clothing to be produced, and on the other end lessen the amount of clothing that’s immediately gong to landfills.”

For the grand finale, Miss Eco Teen USA for 2023, Gabriella Dixon, made an appearance with her reflective dress made of CDs.

“When I was little, I always watched movies,” Dixon said. “So I was like, I have CDs laying around; let me just think of something like that. And just having this was a great representation of being sustainable.”

This is the first year for the fashion show, but organizers hope to “recycle” this idea–next year.

“Hopefully, people’s imaginations are expanded about what sustainability means. And that there are things they can do in their lives,” said LeRoy Harvey, Meridian Township Environmental Programs Coordinator. “Everyone wears clothing, and you can be more mindful about the choices that you make when you’re shopping.”

And it’s just the beginning of the township’s regional “Green Series.” They’re already planning a community recycling event, a solar event and a compost bin sale.
