Suspicious package shuts down Newark airport terminal on 9/11 anniversary; bomb squad investigating

A terminal at Newark Airport was briefly evacuated Sunday as police investigated a possible bomb found in a bathroom, Port Authority sources said.

Port Authority police responding to the airport for an unrelated incident were flagged down by a man who alerted them about a suspicious device in a first-floor men’s bathroom, sources said.

Police called a bomb squad, which removed the device for further examination.

Terminal C at the metro-area airport was evacuated and levels 1 and 2 were closed to traffic around 1 p.m., the airport said in a tweet.

Police have recovered surveillance footage of a man leaving the bathroom who they believe left the device. They are still searching for him, as well as dusting for fingerprints, sources said.

The bathroom where the device was discovered was closed for the rest of Sunday.

The suspicious package was discovered around the same time FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate was landing at Terminal C, sources said.

He was heading to the 9/11 ceremony in Lower Manhattan commemorating the 21st anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
