Quebec provincial police say the suspicious death of a woman whose body was found in an apartment on Montreal's South Shore Tuesday is now being treated as a homicide.

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) says local police were called to an apartment on Toulouse Street in Candiac just before noon, where officers found the body of a woman in her 20s.

The case was later transferred to the SQ.

According to Radio-Canada, officers found the victim's body rolled up in a mattress. There was also blood and marks of violence inside the apartment unit.

Radio-Canada says police are now questioning someone who is being referred to as a person of interest.

Officials are not confirming any relation between the victim and this person.

An autopsy will be performed to confirm the cause of death.
