Suspenden la búsqueda del militar estadounidense arrastrado por el mar en Puerto Rico

San Juan, 1 abr (EFE).- La Guardia Costera anunció este lunes que suspendió la búsqueda de Samuel Wanjiru, de 26 años, un turista y militar estadounidense que fue arrastrado por las corrientes marítimas en una playa del noreste de Puerto Rico.

"Mantenemos al cabo Samuel Wanjiru y a su familia en nuestras oraciones, esperando que encuentren la fuerza durante este momento tan difícil", dijo en un comunicado José E. Díaz, comandante del sector San Juan de la Guardia Costera.

El joven militar desapareció el pasado miércoles tras ser arrastrado por las corrientes en la playa La Pared, en el municipio de Luquillo, donde se encontraba de vacaciones con su familia.

Díaz reconoció que "la pérdida de vidas en las playas de Puerto Rico durante el mes de marzo ha sido bastante surrealista", incluyendo la muerte de dos militares.

"Elogio los esfuerzos de todos los equipos de respuesta, que han hecho todo lo posible para encontrar al cabo Wanjiru y que también han respondido a numerosos casos este mes", añadió.

Personal de Oficina de Manejo de Emergencias de Luquillo y de Manejo de Emergencias Estatal Zona Ceiba se movilizaron a la zona con buzos, lanchas, helicóptero y drones, pero no hallaron el cuerpo del militar.

El comandante del sector San Juan de la Guardia Costera advirtió de que las condiciones marítimas se mantienen peligrosas, por lo que es necesario que los bañistas vigilen los avisos meteorológicos. EFE

San Juan, April 1 (EFE).- The Coast Guard announced this Monday that it suspended the search for Samuel Wanjiru, 26, a tourist and American soldier who was swept away by ocean currents on a beach in northeastern Puerto Rico.

"We keep Corporal Samuel Wanjiru and his family in our prayers, hoping they find strength during this very difficult time," José E. Díaz, Coast Guard Sector San Juan commander, said in a statement.

The young soldier disappeared last Wednesday after being swept away by currents on La Pared beach, in the municipality of Luquillo, where he was on vacation with his family.

Díaz acknowledged that "the loss of life on the beaches of Puerto Rico during the month of March has been quite surreal," including the death of two soldiers.

"I commend the efforts of all response teams who have gone to great lengths to find Corporal Wanjiru and who have also responded to numerous cases this month," he added.

Personnel from the Luquillo Emergency Management Office and Ceiba Zone State Emergency Management mobilized to the area with divers, boats, helicopter and drones, but they did not find the body of the soldier.

The commander of the Coast Guard's San Juan sector warned that maritime conditions remain dangerous, making it necessary for swimmers to remain vigilant. Díaz reco"Unfortunately, we continue to face similar marine conditions and it is imperative that we remain prepared and that swimmers stay safe daily by monitoring weather advisories and paying attention to warning signs," Díaz said.
