Suspect surrenders after officer fires shots, misses in Sauget incident, police chief said

An armed man who tried to pull another man from a vehicle during a confrontation early Friday in Sauget fired shots during the incident and has been arrested, according to Police Chief James Jones.

Before the arrest, a police officer fired at the suspect and missed after the man refused to drop his gun, the chief said. He immediately surrendered.

No one was injured.

The incident happened in the 2400 block of Mississippi Avenue at 2:30 a.m., Jones said.

“A man went to a liquor store in the area,” the chief said. “ He then tried to pull someone from the rear of his car after the two of them got into a confrontation.”

The armed man, who was not identified by police pending charges, started shooting his gun, Jones said. Officers were in the area, heard the gunshots and proceeded to the location.

“They ordered the suspect to drop his weapon. He refused to obey. The officer fired his weapon several times, not striking the subject,” Jones said.

The suspect surrendered and is in custody at the Sauget Police Department, pending charges.

Illinois State Police are assisting in the investigation, which is standard procedure when an officer fires his weapon on the job.

Other details were not immediately available.
