Suspect dies in crash after leading Florence County deputies on chase, authorities say

FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A suspect died in a crash Wednesday night after leading Florence County deputies on a chase, South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

A deputy tried conducting a traffic stop at about 10:41 p.m. on a vehicle for erratic driving along Pamplico Highway, the Florence County Sheriff’s Office said. The vehicle then sped off and led deputies on a pursuit before losing control of the vehicle near a bridge on Freedom Boulevard and crashing.

South Carolina Highway Patrol said the driver attempting to elude law enforcement was driving a 1999 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class. The unnamed suspect was the only person in the vehicle.

The driver of the Mercedes-Benz was traveling north on Highway 301 when they attempted to elude law enforcement, traveled off the right side of the road, and collided with a guardrail and several trees, SCHP said.

There was no contact made between law enforcement and the driver’s vehicle. The crash remains under investigation by South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The victim’s name was not immediately available.
